Conservation Grazing in the Mournes

An initiative with NI Water supporting sustainable land management in the Mourne Water Catchment Area.

We are delighted to join NI Water in supporting sustainable land management in the Mourne Water Catchment Area. Our Conservation Grazing Ranger, Andrew Baird, leads the effort with his experience and passion for responsible grazing.

Andrew works closely with the Mourne Conservation Graziers Ltd to maintain healthy heathland ecosystems. He collaborates with NI Water to address graziers’ concerns, ensuring fences and access points are well-maintained. Through regular habitat condition assessments, he monitors grazing levels to promote long-term sustainability.

In addition, Andrew helps manage the impact of public access, tackling issues like off-lead dogs, and works with the National Trust using NIEA surveying methods for consistent habitat monitoring. He also oversees the sheep flock, prevents illegal grazing, and coordinates with the Fire Service to respond swiftly to wildfires.

Together, these efforts help protect and preserve the unique landscape of the Mourne Water Catchment Area for future generations.
