The Engagement Ranger project was launched as a pilot initiative in late 2021. Designed to support both visitors and the landscape, Engagement Rangers worked directly with people exploring the Mournes, promoting safe, responsible enjoyment of the area while encouraging actions that reduce environmental impact.

With growing numbers of people visiting the Mournes for outdoor recreation, not all visitors arrive fully prepared with the necessary equipment or experience. Even seasoned walkers can encounter unexpected challenges, highlighting the importance of good preparation and awareness. Engagement Rangers shared practical guidance rooted in the Leave No Trace principles, including responsible dog control to protect livestock and native wildlife.
Regrettably, due to financial constraints, the Engagement Ranger service was discontinued at the end of 2025.
